What is a Doula anyway?

medium_A129245.jpg

The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.

Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.

A Birth Doula

  • Recognizes birth as a key experience the mother will remember all her life

  • Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor

  • Assists the woman in preparing for and carrying out her plans for birth

  • Stays with the woman throughout the labor

  • Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping the woman get the information she needs to make informed decisions

  • Facilitates communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her clinical care providers

  • Perceives her role as nurturing and protecting the woman's memory of the birth experience

  • Allows the woman's partner to participate at his/her comfort level

But why should I invest in a doula?

  • Shorter labor

  • Decreased chance of requiring a c-section

  • Decreased necessity for pain medication

  • Greater satisfaction about the birth

  • Decreased necessity for medical interventions

  • Increased success in breastfeeding

FATHER'S ARE IMPORTANT,TOO!!

I encourage dad's invaluable active participation to ensure an environment drenched in Oxytocin (the "love" hormone), as the healthiest & safest place for baby to make his/her grand entrance. I offer coaching sessions for father's, teaching them about how to support you during labor, how to bond with your baby in his own unique way and how to properly pace-feed a Breastfed baby. Ask me about how I can support your husband/partner to support you in your most vulnerable hour.

When I receive your information, I will call you to arrange your free initial consult whether it be virtual or a public meet-up spot (coffee shop, library, park ...etc).  After we meet, if you decide to move forward together, I'll be emailing you, the forms you need to fill out and return with down payment for services. All service packages require a down payment of 50% of the total service package fee. The remaining balance is due by week 37, unless a payment arrangement has been discussed and agreed upon.
